Residents across Southern Ontario woke up to anywhere from 10 to 30 centimetres of snow Wednesday morning after a major winter storm blew through the area.

But, after months of mild and dry conditions across the region, some are likely struggling with the idea of having to dig out from that much snow.

Enter on-demand home maintenance app Jiffy.

The Toronto-based startup is offering users in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) free snow removal services Wednesday to help with the hassles of the first big snowfall of the year.

Users within the City of Toronto, Peel, Halton, Durham and York Region will be able to book a snow plow service to come to their home free of charge using the code ‘SNOWDAY.’

“Our goal is to save Torontonians time and make home maintenance as seamless as possible by providing trusted and insured snow removal providers to clear driveways and walkways across the city,” said Paul Arlin, Jiffy co-founder.

Think of Jiffy like the Uber for home services. The platform connects people with trusted and insurance home service providers in 23 categories – from handymen and outdoor maintenance workers, to furniture assembly specialists and plumbers.

Since launching in 2015, the company has already served 10,000 users in Ontario.

According to the company, the promotion has already been quite popular. As of Tuesday evening, they already saw over 200 bookings for snow plowing alone.

The only catch is, once all of the services have been booked users won’t be able to take advantage of the promotion. Jiffy will, however, provide users with a $50 credit to use towards any type of service call on the app – although you might not get to use it towards snow plowing until next winter.

But the service could end up saving home owners a lot of money, especially as winter weather becomes more unpredictable.

“Many residents across the city sign expensive, season-long snow removal contracts each year, despite Toronto’s unpredictable weather,” said Arlin.

“Residents can now order on-demand at-home snow removal through Jiffy’s app or website, simply paying a one-time fee if, and when, they need it.”
